DESIGNPLAST WITH LSR SILICONE

After the meeting with CCI Bayonne Pays Basque at the Medica 2018 trade fair, we joined to the Health LSR Cluster, a consortium of companies in the transpyrenean area dedicated to the development of liquid silicone products in the field of health. All companies are industrial and have a specific task in the product cycle, in other words, we can find everything from raw material producers to engineers and designers or mould makers and injectors. The main idea of this cluster is share the professionalism of the member companies and make the area of the Pyrenees an expert and reference region in the handling of LSR in health.

Our task in this consortium is provide support on product design and LSR injection mould design.

During these months there have been informative conferences in the Cluster where leading companies have been presented in the transformation of LSR, regulations that will be applied shortly or simply information on how to treat silicone. Very interesting days where we have learned and made good contacts.

BUT, WHAT IS LSR?

The LSR is a high purity platinum cured silicone with low compression, great stability and ability to resist extreme temperatures of both heat and cold, suitable for the production of parts where high quality is essential. Due to the thermostable nature of the material, LSR injection requires special treatment.

Chemically, LSR belongs to the family of thermostable elastomers. LSR becomes 30% in the silicone family, being the largest group in this family.

¿WHY WE CAN USE IT ON THE MEDICAL FIELD?

  • Biocompatibility: LSR is resistant to growth of bacteria and does not affect or corrode other materials. This material can be sterilized with different methods.
  • Cure in completely and quickly way.
  • LSR can handle sterilization processes, thanks to its effectiveness it is used for medical and baby care.
  • Injection of the LSR mold is an inherently clean production process, because the chemical components are sealed within a closed system.
  • Transparent material and easy to dye with a certain color, thanks to these properties contact lenses are manufactured.
  • This is a very flexible material so it can be used in cable or valves.
  • It is a waterproof and non-conductive material; It is a good electrical insulator.
  • It is very resistant to inclement weather and aging.
